Harvey Humphrey
Experienced Project/Program Manager
Seeking a New Position
I have a comprehensive background leading cross-functional, global teams in technology companies. I am a superior practitioner of project management tools and techniques coupled which are coupled with outstanding execution, mentoring and teaching skills. I am passionate about solving problems through an intuitive grasp of business processes coupled with the ability to build useful tools from commonly available software packages to promote efficiency and consistency.
Leadership Philosophy
My leadership philosophy is the result of four years of intensive study at West Point tempered and reinforced by extensive service in the U.S. Army and civilian industry. The motto of West Point is, “Duty, Honor, Country” and the Cadet Honor Code demands that “A Cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do”. The bedrock concepts of service to the country and adherence to an absolute code of honor form the basis for what the institutional mission statement terms a “leader of character”, a characterization I strive to be worthy of every day as the teachings of West Point are at the heart of who I am and what I believe in.
Hopefully, it comes as no surprise that Honor, Integrity and Respect are core constructs in my philosophy. I strongly believe in Leadership by Example which compels me to be guided by the maxim that a leader never asks their subordinates to do something they are not willing to do themselves. I am also mindful of the corollary that “Nothing is impossible if you do not have to do it yourself”. In the military context, setting the dangers of combat aside, this means sharing discomfort and deprivation, even when you could avoid it. In my view, the basic requirements for the leader to share in personal deprivations (e.g. long hours, extensive travel, uncomfortable working conditions) and attend to the needs of their subordinates are applicable in and out of the military.
As a leader, I am responsible for everything my team does or fails to do. In addition, I have a responsibility to allow and enable by subordinates to advance while accomplishing the job at hand. “Mission First, People Always” is another Army maxim which has universal applicability and speaks to the subtle and difficult balancing act required to accomplish an assigned task without consuming the people. We must all sacrifice on occasion to deliver results. At some point, however, the need of the individual to pursue a developmental assignment, training, or work-life balance must be accommodated.
Finally, I believe that a leader must communicate their intent clearly. If this is done properly, subordinates are empowered to make decisions and take actions to support that intent without constant supervision and approval. Individuals must be held accountable for what they accomplish or fail to accomplish but I will never punish someone for an error committed while making a good-faith effort to comply with my intent.
Skills
To begin with, I am proficient in all the Project Management Process Groups of Integration Management, Scope Management, Schedule Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, Resource Management, Communications Management, Risk Management, Procurement Management, and Project Stakeholder Management. My preference is to deal face-to-face with teams and customers but I also have deep experience with remote teams and customer relationships. The bulk of my experience is with the Waterfall methodology but Agile and Scrum are recent additions to my toolkit.
Mastery of the prescribed processes makes me a competent Project Manager. I believe that the thing that sets me apart is the fact that I am a problem solver by nature and by training. This serves me well both in the conduct of routine project work but also in the analytical realm associated with risk anticipation and mitigation. I am particularly interested and successful in recognizing process issues and correcting them with solutions built from readily available resources. Please see the “Examples” page for descriptions and images.
